Challenge 1 Walkthrough (8) Whack the Moles

069. The Spanish army soon emerge from the shadow, east of Persian Garden (Pasargadae). I made a "V" formation hoping to lure the enemy into the middle to be decimated. But the Spanish army was also holding ground. So I had to actively attack. Middle Spanish Warrior goes down!

070. Since patch .275, players have been reporting that the AIs are a lot more likely to declare war. The patch notes said that the AI considers invasion when it has "equal" forces. Now anybody with basic knowledge about warfare knows that the invaders need a larger army. So what does that leave us? Tons of failed AI invasion.

Another interesting AI war behavior is that it pulls back its invading troops as long as it thinks the war is unwinnable, i.e. the assault force is now too small to win the war. Now you know what will happen - the AI retreats as soon as the war starts!

Although Isabella only lost 1 warrior, she was already retreating!

Darius gave pursuit, hoping to kill 4 more units to complete City State missions!

071. The Spanish units have almost retreated back into their homeland. But there are still units lingering around - easy pickings for the Pikeman! Horseman, Catapult in the forest, Archer on the shore... 5 units killed!

072. Instant alliance with Rio De Janeiro and Hanoi! But that's all Darius can profit from this war. The Spanish homeland defense is too powerful for Pikeman even 10 turns ago. The City States will serve as excellent buffer between Persia and Spain. It is time to call the truce and go home.

073. Pretty similar situation for the Arabian invasion. By the time my Longswordsman horde arrive at the battle front, the Arabian army had largely retreated! (What a joke!) I was able to kill a few units on my counterattack.

Seriously, 90% of the wars initiated by the AIs are "whack-a-mole" wars. The player has to work hard to kill a few units before the AI decides to retreat. However, soon the AI will think the golden opportunity has again come (but it has not) and declare another premature war, where they resort to yet another hasty retreat.

074. Signed the peace deal with Spain. On regular games, the human players really welcome the AIs to declare war on us, since the human player can counterattack and sign a very juicy peace treaty without being accused as a warmonger. But Mesopotamia is a very "poor" map, and the Level 9 MOD removed AI's gold cheat to slow down human's growth. So I can't get anything from this peace treaty, not even re-selling my resources. Spain is already broke!

075. But England is rich enough to pay cash. Persia sent 500 gold to CS Bucharest, which offers Gem. So my own Persian Gem can be sold to England. That just made the City State alliance a lot cheaper.

076. I'd love to push further into Arabia, too, but Harun already has Musketman. Too late!

077. But I can still try to kill as many units as possible before signing the pace deal. An Arab Great General bites dust in the forest!

078. Arab is also quite rich. So immediately after the war I can sell extra resources to essentially take most Arab's income away. It is still equivalent to an unequal peace treaty, although it isn't.

079. Ottoman, which is located along the Nile river, is also relatively wealthy. These early incomes are hard to come by, and I have to spend the money wisely!
